RUBEDO PRESS is pleased to announce the official release of Demetra George’s new book, Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice: A Manual of Traditional Techniques (Volume One). Almost twenty years in the making, this work is the culmination of decades of research, translation, and practical application in the world of Hellenistic astrology. Richly illustrated with a wealth of exercises, tables, and diagrams, this volume skilfully harnesses the chart-reading techniques of the ancient world for the modern practitioner.

“This book provides a comprehensive overview of the techniques of what has come to be known as Hellenistic astrology, which was practiced in the Mediterranean region around the time of the Roman Empire. This is not meant to be a purely historical survey, but is instead designed with the intent of teaching contemporary astrologers how to use ancient astrology in practice. The goal of the book, then, is to help revive an astrological tradition that has been lost for centuries until now. […] In many ways this book represents the culmination of numerous threads in Demetra’s life, and the intersection of several paths that have made her uniquely qualified to help revive and teach ancient astrology”. —Chris BRENNAN

“Demetra George’s Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice is the culmination of decades of study and teaching in traditional astrology. In both the essence of the tradition and interpretive details, Demetra acts as Ariadne’s thread, guiding the student through the labyrinth of terminology and ideas. Her skill as a teacher comes through in each lesson, including the valuable exercises and examples, which help every student understand the beauty and richness of traditional astrology”.—Benjamin DYKES, PhD

Volume One of this two-volume work is now available. (Volume Two will be available later in 2019, and we will provide more details as to its availability as they arise).

volume one: Assessing Planetary Condition

In ancient cosmology, the planetary divinities symbolised the hierarchy of forces that shape our lives in the sublunary world. Not all planets are created equal in a given nativity, however, and so the first step of the practicing astrologer is to assess the condition of each planet in a chart in order to determine its effectiveness (or lack thereof) in the native’s life. To this end, this volume provides a series of rigorous methods for evaluating the condition of each planet in a birth chart through the lenses of classification (sect, gender, benefic/malefic), signs and rulerships (residences, reception, exaltation, triplicities, bounds), the solar phase cycle (speed, direction, visibility, phase, phasis), lunar considerations (course, phases, bonding, nodes, bending, eclipses, prenatal lunation), and aspects (configurations, witnessing, testimony, bonification, maltreatment, adherence, overcoming, rays). Finally, it brings all of these factors together in a powerful synthesis that unlocks the layers of a chart with unrivaled precision.

Demetra George (MA, Classics) is a pioneering mythic-archetypal astrologer, who studies Greek astrological texts, as well as the transmission of classical doctrines into the Arabic and Medieval worlds. An international lecturer since 1992, she has taught the history of astrology at both Kepler College and the University of Oregon. She presently lives in Eugene, Oregon, maintains a private practice, offers mentoring and educational programs, and leads tours to archæological sites in the Mediterranean. Recipient of the Regulus Award, her work provides the keys to understanding all forms of traditional astrology.

Her previous books include Asteroid Goddesses: The Mythology, Psychology, and Astrology of the Re-emerging Feminine (ACS, 1986; revised ed., Ibis, 2003), Astrology for Yourself: How to Understand and Interpret your own Birth Chart: A Workbook for Personal Transformation (Wingbow, 1987; revised ed., Ibis, 2006), Mysteries of the Dark Moon: The Healing Power of the Dark Goddess (HarperCollins, 1992), Finding Our Way through the Dark (ACS, 1994; AFA, 2008), and Astrology and the Authentic Self: Integrating Traditional and Modern Astrology to Uncover the Essence of the Birth Chart (Ibis, 2008).
